The former Boston Store flagship department store on West Wisconsin Avenue, now branded as HUB640, has announced its first tenant, North Shore Healthcare, which will consolidate its workforce across multiple area sites, including its headquarters in Greendale. According to an article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the company will expand its workforce to approximately 80 employees within the first year at its new downtown offices. North Shore Healthcare will occupy the second floor of the former department store, leasing 23,000 sq. ft. for 10 years at HUB640.
Also announced today, the Democratic National Convention has released its official website, with planning underway for the August convention. Just last week, an exciting DNC announcement was made public, as CNN applied for construction permits to transform the historic Turner Hall into its political CNN Grill, a staple attraction in recent conventions. According to a recent Business Journal article, plans include temporary signage and patriotic window treatments for the iconic Milwaukee venue. We encourage downtown stakeholders to subscribe to our DNC Download for the latest updates as planning for the convention continues.
Downtown businesses continue to respond to the needs of our community during COVID-19 through impactful measures. Milwaukee-based Northwestern Mutual and its foundation have donated more than $1.5 million to support its non-profit partners in response to COVID-19. The company has donated $1 million to Feeding America for efforts nationwide, and an additional $50,000 to Feeding America in Milwaukee. Regionally, Northwestern Mutual has also supported the Dominican Center, Metcalfe Park Community Bridges, Milwaukee Christian Center, Ronald McDonald House Charities Eastern Wisconsin, United Performing Arts Fund and the United Way of Milwaukee and New York City. Additional donations include the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s MKE Responds Fund and American Red Cross disaster recovery program. “During this difficult time of uncertainty, our non-profit community will become an even more critical provider of assistance, as well as hope,” said Eric Christophersen, president of Northwestern Mutual Foundation, in a March 26 press release.
Last Friday, 3rd Street Market Hall announced Brewers players and hometown heroes Ryan Braun and Christian Yelich, along with local companies will provide meals to frontline health care workers at four major local hospitals, including the Froedtert Hospital & Medical College of Wisconsin health network, Ascension Wisconsin, Children’s Wisconsin and Aurora Healthcare.
Christian and Ryan’s efforts inspired additional support from other Wisconsin-based companies, including American Family Insurance, Associated Bank, Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company, Sargento and VISIT Milwaukee. 1,000 meals prepared by future food vendors of the 3rd Street Market Hall, including Milk Can Hamburgers & Custard, Sax’s, Kimchi – Daikon and Donut Monster, were distributed to health care workers to take home and enjoy with their families over the holiday weekend.
Co-developers of The Avenue, Josh Krsnak and Tony Janowiec matched the donations made by Yelich and Braun. “The health care workers across our community are facing unprecedented stress and risk this Easter on the frontlines of caring for the victims of the coronavirus,” Krsnak said. “Making sure they and their families have a good meal is one small way The Avenue and the 3rd Street Market community can say, ‘thank you’ to these dedicated professionals.”
A similar effort is underway by the Milwaukee Business Journal’s ’40 Under 40’ young professional class of 2020. To date, the fundraising campaign has raised over $19,000 since March 20 through a GoFundMe account. Funds have been used to support local coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants to prepare snacks and coffee for area healthcare providers. To donate to this campaign, click here.
