Each year on April 14, Milwaukeeans celebrate all of the things they love about our city for 414 Day, aptly dubbed “Milwaukee Day” because of our area code. This year we’re celebrating from the comfort of our own homes because our community has been touched by the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the outbreak, it’s important to continue to support downtown businesses and in celebration of 414 Day, we’ve compiled a few ways you can share your love of downtown.
Leaving a review of a local business on Facebook, Yelp or Google helps that business in ways you may not even realize. Reviews help boost the online visibility of the business, builds credibility, provides important feedback and encourages others to shop there.
As part of Milwaukee Downtown’s MKE A Difference campaign and in celebration of Milwaukee Day, we’re encouraging you to share your love for downtown businesses by leaving a review on your favorite business’s Facebook, Yelp and/or Google page for your chance to win $500 in downtown gift cards.
Support downtown businesses by leaving a review on their page, then post a screenshot of the review in the comments of our 414 Day Facebook post. To enter on Instagram and Twitter, post your screenshot with the hashtag #MKEaDifference. For each review you leave and post with the hashtag, your name will be entered into a raffle for our grand prize, $500 in gift cards to downtown businesses. Two winners will be selected. Be sure to stay tuned to our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more details!
Many restaurants have been adapting and getting creative during these uncertain times. One way that you can show your support is by ordering to-go, delivery and curbside options. It’s a great way to shake up your meals and skip a night of cooking at home. WWBIC compiled a list of vendors they recommend ordering from here and you can view OnMilwaukee's running list of restaurants offering curbside services here.
Another great way to support a local business is by purchasing gift cards to bars, restaurants, hotels, salons and spas. Purchase a gift card to your favorite local businesses and save it for your future self, or further spread the love and gift it to friends and family members.
If you’ve been turning to retail therapy while you’re safer at home, consider purchasing things like clothing, coffee, home goods or gifts with local retailers. We’ve compiled a list here that includes downtown and nearby retailers who offer e-commerce options.
Due to the Safer at Home order, many of our friends in the hospitality and service industries are faced with new challenges. Consider supporting these Milwaukee industries this 414 Day by donating to virtual tip jars.
